Germany – Regensberg - May 28th

...And on to our next day in Germany!  After checking out of our Gausthof we did 4 climbs in a cave area which was a TON of fun!  I absolutely loved it there.  Definitely the best climbing of the trip.
In the early afternoon we drove toward the town of Regensburg.  Along the way we found a place to stay, called Gastof Spitzauer.

After we were done climbing, we drove to Regensburg and saw the beautiful Dom St. Peter cathedral.

Sculpture of King Ledwig I

We paid the additional 2 euro to see the treasury museum within the cathedral.  It was really interesting to see all the intriquite and elaborate items the bishops of the cathedral have used.  Didn’t realize that everything they use is specific to the bishop himself.

Next we saw the Porta Praetoria, which is the old Roman wall of the city.  I love old stuff!

Next to the Porta Praetoria is a bridge from which you can see the Steinerne Bridge.  It is a beautiful old stone bridge with a view of the Dom St. Peter in the background.

Next we walked by the Joseph Church and then drove to the Schloss Thurn and Taxis palace (the palace of the current royalty).   We were going to do the tour through the castle, but it was crazy expensive.  We did get to see the outside of the private church, however, which was very cool.  It was all made of shells and they were placed in these intricate patterns and to create the sculptures.

Next we just wandered around the town and saw a cool church called St. Emmerem church.  Next we saw one of our favorite churchs of our entire trip – the Church of our Lady (Alte Kapelle).  It was a beautiful Renaissance style church.

Afterwards we tried to find the old city wall – but we failed.   So instead we got some yummy ice cream (mint chocolate chip for Kenneth and raspberry for me) and got some excellent Turkish food for lunch.  This day also happened to be some sort of holiday in Bavaria and there were TONS of people in the traditional dress of Bavaria – the lederhosen!   We totally tried to get pictures without looking too weird.   They were awesome!  I totally would have bought some for us, but they were crazy expensive!

At this point we headed back to our gastof for dinner.  Kenneth had brawts & sauerkraut and I had schnitzel – which was fried pork and some sort of potato salad.   Not going to lie, didn’t like it very much.  We wanted to try a traditional Bavarian dessert, and our waitress (the only English speaker at the hotel) suggested something.   It was some gelatinous potato with sugar on top.  It was not very good either!  It was incredibly heavy.  Overall, we are not the biggest fans of German food – at least when it comes to their dinners!
