Germany – Regensberg - May 29th

The following day we spent some time around our gastof (which was about 7km from Regensberg). We were going to meet up with my sister and her family later that day, so we decided to explore outside of the main city in the morning.

We started off with breakfast at our gastof – typical bread, cheese and meat and then walked around town.  We first saw the Peck church, and then decided we would drive along the Danube River across the street from our gastof.  We drove to the town of Pielenhofen  and saw an awesome church.  It had a beautiful memorial to the people of the town who died during both WWI and WWII.  In the church itself they had pictures of some of the men as well.  I thought it was really cool that they had the pictures up more than 60 years after they had died.

On a map in Pielenhofen we saw there were were some castle ruins in a town nearby called Kallmunz.  We were definitely not going to miss out on it!  So we drove to Kallmunz and I am so glad we did!  It was by far one of my favorite towns of the whole trip!  It was incredibly beautiful!!   Not to mention the castle ruins were the best too!

This town had the most beautiful colors!

It was so tiny driving through this streets!

Some kind of warning sign...perhaps don't fall on the crazy slippery steps with all the sudden rainstorms!

The beautiful forest we hiked through to get to the ruins

Absolutely love this place!

It started raining like crazy and had to hide under this archway for quite awhile

After our fabulous hike in Kallmunz we headed towards Regensburg and went to see the Walhalla.  It is a beautiful structure that was built to honor Germans who made a positive impact in Bavaria.  At first we weren’t going to pay the few euros to go inside because there was a lot of restorative work going on, but we did anyway, and I am very glad that we did.  It was absolutely gorgeous inside.

After we left Wahalla we saw yet another castle on the mountainside, so of course we HAD to check it out!  It was in the town of Danau and the hike up was beautiful and had a pristine cemetery at the base of it.  Germans are apparently required to keep up the graves of their relatives or else they forfeit the plot.

Afterwards we headed back into Regensburg and waited for my sister and her family to arrive.  While we waited we got some ice cream (blood orange for me and mango for Kenneth) and checked out the Mammut store (rockclimbing store).

By the early evening my sister, Alisha, her husband Sai and my nephew Nox arrived.   They live about 3 hours north of Regensburg and had never been there before.   We showed them around the Dom St. Peter and then walked through the adorable streets of the town and saw the local street performer.

Not that you can tell...but these are the catacombs in the Dom St. Peter

Then we headed to get some dinner.  Kenneth and I were so sick of German food at this point and we opted for some Italian pizza instead.  It was a tasty pizza with salami, eggplant, parmesan and mozzarella.
Next we showed them the Church of our Lady that we love so much, then walked around the fruit stands, had a crazy funny experience in the bathroom with my sister, had (more) ice cream – truffle flavored this time (for both of us).

Sai really liked the floating guy

We were pretty much done with Regensberg, and Alisha & Sai sounded interested in seeing the castle we explored that morning in Kallmunz so we headed there to show them.  I was beyond happy to be able to go explore it again.

Sisters :)

After that we were done for the day and we all headed back to the gastof where we would all be staying.
